Frederick
Douglass Legacy
The year 2020 marked the 175th anniversary of the publication of Frederick Douglass’s autobiography Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, and his historic visit to Ireland. During the four months he spent there, he said he was treated for the first time in his life "like a man and not a color." He was inspired by Daniel O’Connell, and he expanded his fight against slavery in America to a movement to fight for “the oppressed everywhere.”
AAIDN has produced and participated in a number of events with partners to recognize this anniversary, and to honor the legacy of Frederick Douglass and his relationship with Ireland.
